Cal Poly Pomona Brew Works
Innovation Brew Works (IBW) at Cal Poly Pomona’s Innovation Village represents a groundbreaking fusion of education, hospitality, and craft brewing. Established in 2014, IBW is the first fully operational brewery on a college campus in the nation, open to the public of all ages and designed as a hands-on, immersive learning environment.
This project involved comprehensive planning, architectural design, construction documentation, and construction administration for the addition of a state-of-the-art brewpub seamlessly integrated with the existing campus café. The renovation and reprogramming of the café created a dynamic brewery laboratory and incubation facility, offering students, faculty, and alumni unparalleled experiential learning opportunities in brewing, foodservice, and restaurant operations.
The design reflects a sophisticated balance of functionality, education, and hospitality. Open and inviting spaces, thoughtful materiality, and intuitive circulation support both public engagement and student learning. The project embodies Cal Poly Pomona’s “learn-by-doing” philosophy and amplifies the brewery’s tagline, “Crafting an Education,” by transforming theoretical knowledge into tangible, real-world experience.
IBW serves as a beacon of innovation and design excellence, demonstrating how educational environments can merge with commercial and community-focused spaces to create immersive, hands-on learning laboratories. The result is a landmark campus destination where craft, education, and community converge.
