CSUSB Dining Commons | San Bernardino

This feasibility study explores the transformation of the existing Dining Commons on the second floor of the Commons Building at California State University, San Bernardino into a flexible, multi-purpose venue capable of supporting banquets, lectures, and large-scale campus events.

The proposed renovation emphasizes adaptability and functionality, accommodating events ranging from intimate gatherings to functions of 200–400 guests. The design approach prioritizes spatial flexibility through a curated mix of dining and soft seating, allowing for multiple configurations that support both individual and group use. Furniture selections are coordinated with the previously approved seating layout to ensure seamless integration with the existing Dining Commons.

Design services include comprehensive furniture selection in close collaboration with the client and manufacturers, with careful consideration of materiality, color palettes, durability, and comfort. Lighting strategies are evaluated to create visual interest and enhance the atmosphere for varied event types, while ceiling infrastructure options are explored to support suspended décor and event installations.

The scope also includes coordination of budgetary costs, procurement, and delivery schedules to align design intent with operational and financial goals. The result is a versatile, inviting environment that elevates the Commons Building as a dynamic campus destination for academic, social, and ceremonial events.
