CSUSB John M. Pfau Library | San Bernardino, CA

This feasibility study reimagines the John M. Pfau Library and Information Technology Center at California State University, San Bernardino as a sophisticated, 24/7 academic destination. The design envisions a seamless union of library and technology functions, transforming the first-floor concourse into an open, light-filled environment that supports collaboration, focused study, and technology-driven learning at all hours.

Strategic removal of interior walls creates a continuous, flexible space accommodating computer workstations, curated study zones, vending amenities, and discreet security provisions—elevating both functionality and user experience.

The existing complex blends a five-story library dating to the late 1960s with a 1995 addition that transitions into a two-story, triangular technology building with a basement level. The renovation carefully unifies these distinct structures, enhancing circulation, visibility, and spatial clarity while honoring the architectural character of both the campus’s historic and contemporary fabric.
